Writing Game #08 - Fridge Magnet Stories

As it's Sunday and we're all having a lazy one, here's a further continuation of the 'Writing Games' posts. This brief is useful for developing ideas, working on a subconscious creative level, and surprising yourself. It's one that takes you off in many different directions.

Writing Game #08 - Fridge Magnet Stories

Right, so... Taking a piece of paper and folding it vertically into thirds, your task is to write ten random words in each column, cut each word up into fridge magnet style pieces, and use your new idea tiles to construct bunches of keywords to help formulate ideas. You can customize this method to focus on any element of writing you like; plot, character and narrative and so on.

I've had a go at it myself this morning, (see below) with a focus on working up plot ideas:

Column 1:

Mystery
Journey
Flower
Guitar
Seagull
Boat
Coast
Orange

Revenge
Tea

Column 2:

Order
Vanguard
Whale
Willow
Scroll
Olive
Bazaar
Dishonoured
Shoe
Promise

Column 3:

Freedom
Paint
Desk
Software
Light
Redemption
Mattress
Night
Gate
Change

This is really useful for moving away from the conscious side of the creative process. Remember, the faster that you do this, the more effective the results. As always you're welcome to share your thoughts and ideas below.
